Babylonian palms

A line of Babylonian palms can be found at the entrance to the Klosterstraße U-Bahn station. It's a little something unexpected! For more murals, check out Monday Mural.

Although the palms have a very Art Deco appearance, the design actually comes from those found in King Nebuchadnezzar's Babylonian palace circa 604 - 562 BC! The tiles were installed in the Berlin U-Bahn in 1913 by architect Alfred Grenader.

  1. They look very Art Deco. I can't read German but if the date on the poster is the date it was created it's about the right era.

    1. They were put in the U-Bahn in 1913, but the original design is from the Babylonian era circa 604 - 562 BC. We have a whole museum full of stuff plundered from antiquity here in Berlin. I think this was part of the "leftovers". ;-)

  3. Is it glazed or painted. Babylonian decoration was glazed but a bit difficult with those bricks I think or the whole wall was painted first and then shuffled into the oven.

  6. Elegant but if you hadn't said they're palms I probably would have never guessed. ;)

  16. Nice decor. I assume this is art nouveau rather than art deco, but it has the feeling of both.
