September theme day: Curiosities

I hope no one is shocked, but this piece entitled Peace be with You, is certainly a curiosity! The man pictured here with his large member on the side of the TAZ (Tageszeitung) building bears a certain resemblance to Bild editor Kai Diekmann. A feud has been brewing between the rival newspapers since the sixties, but came to a head in 2009 when this work was erected. The mural is positioned so that it is perfectly visible from Diekmann's upper story corner office. Despite complaints from others in the neighborhood, the piece by artist Peter Lenk (known for his risque work) is now a protected landmark. The next time you're in Berlin, just take a detour down Rudi Dutschke Straße near Checkpoint Charlie to see it for yourself.

I can't believe September is already here. Where did the summer go? It's time for the latest CDP Theme Day and you'll find more examples of Curiosities from around the world here.

  3. I think you may win the prize for the most curious posting!! Can you not hear what a kerfuffle there would be here if someone did that to a building here. ;-))

  4. Whoa! If this is "Peace be with you" I wonder what an outright declaration of war would be! You've found quite the curiosity here!

  5. I do believe that you win the award for the most impressive interpretation of the "curiosities" theme, Halcyon. I concede.

  6. Holy smokes! This wins the prize for sure. It doesn't get much more curious.

  8. The title of this relief doesn't mean "Peace with you" , but refers to Friede Springer, Axel Springers widow. He was the owner of Bild, so to understand this work you need absolutely.to know the background. All people shown.were subjects of Bild headlines.Read about Peter Lenk and this work.

  9. I must admit. I had to click on the photo I first saw on the CDP Facebook page to see if it was, indeed, what I thought rising up the side of the building. And it is. Huh!

  12. Curiosity, indeed!
Love the story behind it. Kampf zwischen Titanen, one with a taunting sense of humor. ;-)

  13. Thats a very heavy one but with a lot of humor I didn't expect there.

  14. No one on CDP is going to top this one for Theme Day! A fascinating story and amazing that it is considered a landmark in the city. I'd love to see the reactions of people unfamiliar with the story.

  15. I love the mural, but I alao appreciate the words (upon a theme) that you have used to relate your post. You must have had a thesaurus beside you. Yep, I agree that the gong is yours. No wonder you were so confident that you had your "curiosity" in the can!
