Colorful boat

Here's a look back at one of the colorful boats that was docked at the Tegelersee back when I did the tour on the Moby Dick. The water was so smooth and made some very nice reflections, you'll find more of them at Weekend Reflections.

PS: Don't forget to take a look at Halcyon Travels for more from beautiful Lisbon.

Sunny days

Sadly, it seems the sunny days have come to an end. It's been cold and rainy here in Berlin and there's more autumnal weather forecast for the weekend. This shot was taken just this past Monday on German Unity Day. The weather was gorgeous and it was nice to see so many people out and about, both on boats and on land. I got this wonderful view of the Spree and the city skyline on the famous Kronprinzen Brücke (known locally as the dragon bridge) in Tiergarten.

In other news, today was my last day on the job. Unfortunately, the company didn't have the financial means to extend my contract. It's a bit frustrating to know that I'll have to start over with my job search, but the dh and I have some big travel plans to look forward to in the meantime.

Moby Dick

The Moby Dick is one of the better-known boats on the tour circuit in and around Berlin. The dh and I gave it a whirl awhile back when we did a tour of the lakes and canals just north of the city. It was a relaxing afternoon/early evening and now I can say I've finally been on the famous Moby Dick! If you want to see the view form the inside of the boat, take a look here.

A fine day

It was a beautiful autumn day to be out on the water. I love seeing the city from the vantage point of the Spree!

Natural frame

My boat tour around the lakes had very interesting windows. They were perfect for capturing other boats passing by!

Smooth sailing

Just look at the beautiful, smooth waters of the Havel River. Just a few hundred meters ahead is the place where Berlin's major rivers, the Havel and the Spree meet up. We were lucky to have such nice weather the day we went on this boat cruise through Tegel and Spandau. I wish the summer didn't have to end!

On the Spree

I'm not sure what the significance of this old boat is, but it makes a nice focal point out on the Spree. I can't believe August is already halfway over. I don't want the summer to end yet! You'll find more treasures at Tuesday Treasures.

On the water

As I said yesterday, there are many ways to enjoy your time on the Spree. Perhaps one of these canoes strikes your fancy?

A paddleboat is another fun way to get out on the water.

Or there's always the paddleboard - you can always take a little break if it gets too tiring. How would you like to spend your summer day on the Spree?

Fancy bridge

I recently showed you the Oberbaumbrücke by night during the 25 year Mauerfall celebrations. Now here's a better look at the bridge in the daytime. It really is quite lovely, especially under a blue September sky.

PS: Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends! Eat some pumpkin pie for me.

October theme day: Movement

Staying with yesterday's water theme, here's another look at one of Berlin's many waterways. Although it isn't totally apparent from this shot, this police boat was zipping by. Perhaps there was a Pfannkuchen emergency somewhere?

I can hardly believe a brand new month is here! I have started seriously looking for work, so I hope my phone will be ringing off the hook with interview requests soon. I hope you have some nice things to look forward to this month as well. If you'd like to see more examples of movement from around the world, just click here.

PS: I am posting photos from my recent trip to Paris on my other photoblog, Halcyon Travels. I've got a bonus movement shot posted there. Please stop by and take a look. You can click here or on the link on the right side of this page. Enjoy!

Going up

Since the basin on this lift lock is somewhat closed, it's hard to get a good impression of how far up we actually were. But I tried!

Here's a look over the treetops.

And now the gates are opening at the top of the lock. We sailed down a little ways and looked around before turning around and doing it all again. It was a nice way to spend an afternoon and I'd love to come back when the new lock is built to give it a test whirl as well!

It's finally Friday. I hope you've got some nice plans for the weekend. The weather is supposed to be nice, so I'll probably be on the golf course. Hope your skies are blue too - you can see more at Skywatch.

Von Munchhausen

This friendly little boat took us up and down at the Schiffshebewerk Niederfinow. We were amongst the first onboard and got prime seats on the front row at the top of the boat. I have no idea why the boat is named von Munchhausen, but it was a fun little tour that lasted a little more than an hour. For more signs, take a look at Signs, Signs.

Der Berliner Dom und der Spree

As in any city with a river running through it, one of the best ways to see the main sites is by boat. There is no shortage of boat tour companies here in Berlin and scenes like this are quite common in the summer months.

As you probably guessed, the big church in the background is the Berliner Dom. Visitors can climb to the top to get some nice views over the city (I've shown some previously here and here). To the left, construction continues on the somewhat controversial City Schloss project. A replica of the old city castle is being built here, it will house a museum and is tied to the Humboldt University.

It's the weekend again and that means time to relax! I will be in Paris next week, but I have scheduled a few posts on auto-pilot. See you soon! And don't forget to take a look at other skies on Skywatch.
