Fall color at its finest

We have been having the most beautiful fall here in Berlin. Here's just a small example of some of the color that I've found in my neighborhood. Plus there's a bonus fence! You'll find more of them at Good Fences.

Open gate

I found this fantastic doorway on a recent walk through my neighborhood. I love how the slightly open gate seems to just invite one in. What really caught my eye is the face and the other intricate details just above the door. A real treasure, and you'll find more at Tuesday Treasures.

Fenced off

I found this entrance to a beautiful, private courtyard while strolling through the neighborhoods near where I work recently. There was something really inviting about the trees on the inside. I was very tempted to enter and see more! 

Happy Friday everyone! I am back from a week in Rotterdam. What a great city to visit with such wonderfully friendly people. I am very much looking forward to relaxing this weekend though. But before then, don't forget to take a look at Good Fences.

Renaissance fence

This fence is outside the Spandau Zitadelle. i'll be taking you on a tour of the Renaissance fortress next week, so I hope you'll come back. Until then, take a look at Good Fences.

Cemetery gate

Here's a look at the entrance to Weißensee Cemetery. I just love the intricate work on the wrought iron gate. As you come inside, you see the inscribed stone that I showed you earlier in the week.

There are also a number of other memorials, like this one to victims of the National Socialist regime who were tried at killed at the Plötzensee Prison in Berlin. 

There was also this more general memorial made up of a marble star of David and a myriad of white stones. Very appropriate for a Jewish cemetery. 

I am so glad Friday is finally here. I've been feeling under the weather this week and there's a lot going on with my new job, so I'm ready for a few days of rest. Kloster gate

I showed you the U-Bahn station Klosterstrasse last October and I tried to get back in November before I started my new job, but, unfortunately, I learned the cloister ruins are closed during the winter months. However, I did get this picture of the gate and a statue running for freedom behind it. I hope to get back during the open months to get a better look inside. Cemetery fence

There's just something about the light in this photo that I love. It's so soft and diffused. It's Friday again, hope you have some good plans for the weekend. I may play some golf if the weather is nice enough. Hope you enjoy whatever you have planned and don't forget to stop by Good Fences.

From outside

Here's a look at the German-Russian Museum from outside. Although the sign is very big, this museum is actually in a very residential area and many people probably miss it. It's Wednesday again and you'll find more signs at Signs, Signs.

Plötzensee Memorial

Gedenkstatte Plötzensee is on the site of the old part of Plötzensee Prison (there is still a functioning prison here). During the Nazi years around three thousand people were executed here, most of them political dissidents. I'll be showing more of the memorial site in the days to come. Gated community

You do not see a lot of gated communities here in Berlin. The open gate was rather inviting and I would have liked to see that sculpture in the background. But despite the welcoming gate, I didn't dare to go inside!

JAZ mural

A mural by artist JAZ (Franco Fasoli) in the heart of Berlin. Unfortunately, the area between the buildings where the mural was painted is not open to the public, so I hope you'll forgive the strange angle of this shot. You can see a video of the creation of this mural here.

A shack in Potsdam

I recently took a bike ride around the Wannsee and found this "summer cottage" nearby. It looks more like Bavarian-style architecture than something from Berlin or Brandenburg to me, but I'm pretty sure I could spend my summers (and winters) here just fine!You'll find more fences at Good Fences and more skies at Skywatch.

Friday is finally here! Do you have any big plans? A friend of mine from the US is here and we are going to do the full city tour which will also be a good chance for me to snap some new shots. Happy weekend!

Watchful eagle

This eagle looks over the entrance/exit to the Hohenzollern Platz station. I know I already featured this station on Monday, but I really like this eagle.

The crypt

The Berliner Dom houses a fabulous crypt where many of the Hohenzoller's (Germany's royal family) are buried. I had a great time wandering around and looking at all of the sarcophogi - most of them are really ornate!

Unfortunately, most of my shots didn't quite turn out as the lighting conditions were quite poor. But here is a look at Friederich Wilhelm, The Great Elector's final resting place. His tomb was less ornate than the others, but to be honest I prefer this simple style, it seems more dignified. For more signs, take a look at Signs, Signs.

Snowy Dom

Here's a look at the Berliner Dom from outside. It does look lovely with a small blanket of snow! When the weather is good, you can walk around the outside of the Dom. But since it was cold and slippery, the outside walkway was closed and I only got a view through the windows. It was still worth the visit though, and maybe a reason to go back!

Happy Friday! I'm glad the weekend is finally here. I had some health problems this week, but they're finally clearing up. I'm going to see a few more apartments this weekend and probably play some golf. It should be a fun one. Hope you have some big plans too!
