Bikes for hire

I love how these rental bicycles were displayed like a rainbow inside the S-Bahn station at Wannsee. More signs can be found at Signs, Signs.

Everyday beauty

You can sometimes find the most amazing details in the most mundane of places. Take this art deco style chandelier found at the rather plain Bundesplatz S-Bahn station. From the outside, it looks very similar to yesterday's stop, lots of hulking concrete.

On the inside you're greeted by a long stretch of light that leads you right to the chandelier and up to the platforms on the left. The decorative brickwork on the ceiling and the upper walls is also a nice touch. Sometimes it pays to give a place a second look!

PS: Don't forget to stop by Halcyon Travels for of the beautiful Alsace.

Der Platz

A few Sundays ago I made the trek to the Lidl at Inssbrucker Platz, only to find it closed. That particular Lidl was famous for being one of the few supermarkets that was allowed to open on Sundays. I don't know why it's not open anymore, but I ended up going to a store at Sudkreuz train station where I had to wait 10 minutes outside because the store was overcrowded. On the positive side of things, I did get a nice shot of the S-Bahn sign and the crest. I'm linking up with Signs, Signs.

PS: There's more of beautiful Colmar on Halcyon Travels.

Berlin landmarks

I found this funny mural on the wall of a bakery at the Rathaus Steglitz S-Bahn station. I love how Berlin's most iconic landmarks have been depicted in bread - from the Baguette Brandenburger Tor to the Doughnut Welt Balloon. Pretty funny stuff! A new week has begun - get your weekly mural fix at Monday Mural.

July theme day: Upside down

I have to admit, I really had to go hunting to find something good for today's theme. I had a few other ideas, but they seemed too easy. I wanted something more unexpected. So here is today's shot - it's an upward angle into a light concentrator in the Potsdamer Platz train station.

When Potsdamer Platz was rebuilt after German Reunification, everything was supposed to be ultra-modern and futuristic. Someone had the idea that these concentrators could be used to bring natural light into the S-Bahn station. Basically the concentrator is a long tube with a mirror, the mirror brings the light in and then it travels down the tube to the station. At least that's how it's supposed to work. In reality, it just makes a little circle of light on the ground, but it's still a neat idea.

It seems crazy we're already halfway through the summer. Where did June go? I am still waiting to hear back from my job interviews. Waiting is so hard, but I have a good feeling. Don't forget to check out the other CDP bloggers participating in today's theme, just click here.

PS: Happy Canada Day!!!

Tierpark bear

Finding a Buddy Bear is always such a treat! This colorful model can be found in  Hauptbahnhof. He was painted in 2006 to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of Berlin's Tierpark, not to be confused with the Zoological Garten.

Delicious bench

I have to admit, I love Ritter Sport chocolate. Finding this bench at Berlin Hauptbahnhof was definitely a sweet surprise. I hope you are having a delicious weekend as well. Last night's opera was spectacular - I love living in a city where so much creativity abounds!

Leaves scattered

From the Gleis 17 Memorial at Grunewald station. It's a simple, yet poignant reminder of this terrible time in history. For more signs, visit Signs, Signs.

Funny bench

An interesting styled bench stands in front of the Bornholmer Strasse S-Bahn station. With all those tags, I'm not sure if anyone would dare to sit on it! For more signs, visit Signs, Signs.

Real fans

These guys must be die-hard fans to dress up like that! I saw them on the S-Bahn after the welcome home party on the Fan Meile last Tuesday. Things are back to normal now here in the capitol city, but I have to admit, I miss the excitement a little.

Potsdamer platz station

During the "Divided Years", Potsdamer Platz would have been found in East Berlin. Since reunification, it has been built out and up and has become an important part of the city. It's hard to imagine (at least for me) that a little more than twenty years ago, there was almost nothing here. Now it's one of my favorite places to walk around and take in the city.

Potsdamer Platz

I just love the typography on this subway sign. As you can imagine, Potsdamer Platz is a popular stop on the S-Bahn system. For more signs, visit Signs, Signs.

Old timey station

I love exploring the subway system of any city, but I find Berlin's public transport system to be especially interesting. Here's a look at the Friedrichstrasse station back in 1900. This station has seen alot, it was used by both the East and the West before German reunification. I hear that there were lots of twists and turns in the station at that time and you could easily find yourself at a dead end (on the West side at least). I recently took a tour to learn a bit more about Berlin's underground. I'll share some more shots and stories with you as the week goes on. Until then, you can see more murals at Monday Mural.

S-bahn in monochrome

One of my New Year's resolutions is to improve my German. I thought the best way to do that would be to take a course at the Goethe Institute. My course started this week and this is the station where I get out. I love those bricks and the fancy windows. They just don't make subway / train stops like this anymore!
