During the "Divided Years", Potsdamer Platz would have been found in East Berlin. Since reunification, it has been built out and up and has become an important part of the city. It's hard to imagine (at least for me) that a little more than twenty years ago, there was almost nothing here. Now it's one of my favorite places to walk around and take in the city.
Do they leave the lights on in the evening?
ReplyDeleteConfess I feel the same, last time I was there the wall was down but it still looked very run down
ReplyDeleteTime makes ancient good uncouth. Or so goes the old hymn. Maybe it wasn't "good" in this case, though. It is certainly beautiful now - and an inviting entrance into the maw of the city! Lovely photo, Hal!
ReplyDeleteBerlin must seem very different to people who've lived through the occupation and still live there.
ReplyDeleteWhat you call the divided years was a tragedy for Berlin's population Tourists know not much about the real history.
ReplyDeleteAaron
It looks like a pleasant area to walk through.
ReplyDeleteThe most interesting thing I think is that the iron curtain ran right through it and after 1961, it became a total no man's land. Hard to imagine nowadays, I agree with you it's fantastic (ach Marlene) but the old photos are frightening.
ReplyDeleteI love your perspective and angle on this photo!
ReplyDeleteAmazing how a few years can change the feel and look of a city!
ReplyDeleteIt seems almost surreal that East Germany and its inhabitants were closed off from the world for so many years.
I like those 'light wells' they have there to bring natural light underground!
