Spiraling up

It is perhaps difficult to tell from this photo, but this is the staircase that takes you to to the top of the Juliusturm at Zitadelle Spandau. It was interesting that the stairs were against the walls of the tower instead of being right in the center. It was quite the walk up, though I find coming down is often worse! I just love photographing spiral staircases. Luckily, Berlin has no short supply of them! This one has a special touch of elegance to me and I think it looks great in black and white (even in color, it didn't look much different). Looking up at the grand cupola inside the Bode Museum. I admit, my main objective in visiting this museum was to see the architecture. It was definitely worth it!

Grand staircase

Remember those three Freddies I showed you the other day? Well here they are again, ready to greet you as you ascend the grand staircase inside the Bode Museum. Just looking at the scene makes me dream of the days when balls and parties were held in places like this. I'd love to make an entrance coming down these stairs. Sigh.

Spiral reflections

If I had seen this glass staircase earlier, I would have used it for July's theme day.

May theme day: Revolution

It's a downward spiral at the West Berlin museum (which oddly enough is located in the former East Berlin!). Photos were not really allowed, but I snuck this one with my iPhone.

Spirals

Last year I purchased a yearly card to visit all the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. It's not that expensive and I thought it would help me get out and about more. I recently realized however, that I haven't been using it enough. So I hope you won't mind a tour through Berlin's art world. 

Last week I took you along to see the contemporary art at the Hamburger Bahnhof and today we're looking at the beautiful dome in the Berggruen Museum. Unfortunately, I can't show you any of the actual art as photography was officially not allowed (I did see many people breaking this rule, however). Heinz Berggruen's wonderful collection includes many Picassos, Klees and Matisses. He finally returned to Germany in the late 1990s after living most of his adult life in the US and worked with the state of Berlin to open a new space to showcase these works. He was a personal friend of Picasso and a great patron of the arts. Before his death in 2007, he was often seen walking through the museum, looking at his paintings and talking with visitors.

The climb

To access the Berliner Dom, you've got to make your way up a short flight of stairs. They were pretty with the little bit of snow on them in late January and luckily not too slippery!
