September theme day: Library

These Book Boxes are popping up all over Berlin. I have already featured two on my blog: this one on the square near my home and another one near the S-Bahn station Grunewald. Here's a new one for you at Leon Jessel Platz. It's heartening to see that these boxes are so popular. Every time I pass one by there is at least one person digging through the selection or waiting to add a few new titles to the pile. I guess reading hasn't gone out of style yet!

I can't believe September is upon us already. Where did the summer go? You'll find more interpretations of today's theme here.

  1. I don't think reading will ever go out of style, and I think this is a good thing! Even with e-books, my personal view is that there is nothing more rewarding or enjoyable than holding a book in your hand and turning its pages. I am enjoying seeing these photo boxes, Hal, thanks so much for sharing. :)

  5. That is very cute and an admirable proffering by the city whoop-de-dos.

    1. It is not sponsored by the city. It is entirely a volunteer effort. People come by and put books in for others to take out. You can bring them back, bring others, or just take. It's up to you!

  7. These are even better than the little free libraries I've seen around here.

  8. Really wonderful, these former phone booths make the best little libraries.

  9. This is big and colorful. The little free libraries I've seen in the U.S. have been just that - little. Long live books and libraries!

  12. Until I posted my "library" Thursday, I had no idea this was such a global phenomenon. We spent three days in Berlin last week and just loved your city. I saw one of these old phone booths on a pedestal and it made for a nice sculpture. Thanks for visiting and commenting on ADP.

  14. Oh how I wish we had them here Hal. I love seeing them, it's such a wonderful idea. I think what I like best about them is that they show people still can treat things with respect.. of course the respect would be better on a larger scale but it has to start somewhere oui :)
