More from the cemetery

Maybe it's morbid, but I love walking through cemeteries, especially in other countries. I find it so interesting to see all the different names and I often wonder if the people had happy lives. I can't imagine someone with a name like Willi Martini to be anything other than happy. His name caught my eye during my recent walk through the graveyard, so I had to stop for a photo, And since it was the week following Totensonntag (a kind of Memorial Day here in Germany), all the graves were freshly decorated making them even nicer than usual.

  2. Not morbid at all Hal, like you I find cemeteries a fascinating journey through history. Often the headstones tell a poignant story as well.
You have motivated me to get myself down to the oldest cemetery in my town and find my distant relatives.

  3. This is plenty colorful. Most USA cemeteries are plain, but I have seen some wonderfully colorful cemeteries in Europe. Last year I posted photos from a wonderful cemetery in Nuremberg that was overflowing with flowers.

  4. Jack - upkeep of graves here is a serious business, especially in small towns. My MiL goes at least once a week to make sure her partner's family grave is clean, neat and has fresh plants/flowers.

  5. I disagree about it being a sort of Memorial Day as it isn't about the military. It's merely the Protestant version of Allsaint's, isn't it? I love German graveyards in the winter with all the Advent like "Gestecke".

  10. Happy name that sounds more Italian than German to me! There is a lot of history in cemeteries and churchyards....and often a lot of birds too. Not morbid at all, part of life.
