I find this whole set-up slightly odd. Perhaps the Soviets had some extra tanks left over after the war that they didn't want to take home - so they decided to build this memorial in the gardens of the German-Russian Museum? For more old stuff, take a look at Rubbish Tuesday.
a lot of our veterans' memorials here have tanks on display, too.
ReplyDeleteWell, you know, what else are you going to do with several tons of waste metal? :-)
ReplyDeleteWe've got several Soviet, East Bloc, and other odd national tanks in our War Museum. This one stands out well.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would feel comfortable sitting on those benches with that tank facing my way!
ReplyDeleteUhhhh . . . OK . . .
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine having a tank in such a peaceful place! Strange.
ReplyDeleteInteresting view from the benches, wouldn't want to doze off and wake up looking down the barrel of that!
ReplyDeleteI know of a couple that have gone. When you came into Berling along the Corridor you passed a Tank on a plinth, then the wall came down & I heard it had gone and a pink combine placed there. They were right I saw it. The Brandenburg Gate has a war memorial and there used to be a couple of artillery pieces there but after the wall came down they had gone and the guard of honour that was always there as well so good to see somthing remains
ReplyDeletei would get claustrophobic inside one of those
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's a one man thing!
DeleteWe have a few tanks on display here, too. One is at a park and another at a cemetary. They are interesting to see, but don't think I would like sitting on that bench! Thanks for linking up!
ReplyDeleteIn the old days a tank was exhibited just in front of the Brandenburger Gate - power game?
ReplyDeleteTruth be told, I'm never comfortable seeing guns, canons, tanks...on display. I think such displays make boys and young men think wars are fun. Just my two cents.
ReplyDeleteWar is never fun - for the winners or losers.
DeleteThis kind of gives me the shivers. I agree with EG. Why display this instrument of death?
ReplyDeleteI think I'd be nervous sitting on those benches. They are right in the line of fire.
ReplyDeleteSadly there are too many tanks in the world. Tom The Backroads Traveller
ReplyDeleteWow...a lot of negative comments! :-) Tanks don't frighten me. They are interesting parts of history...sadly we have wars in our human history. It's just a fact. But, I do find a Russian tank in Germany on display a little odd, as you say.
ReplyDeleteThe Soviets did run half the country for a long while... I just think it's weird to think people would want to sit there and stare at it. :)
DeleteI always find it curious, too, that equipment like this is up, elevated from ground level. I guess it keeps people from climbing all over it, but it also makes it look even more imposing...
ReplyDeleteI'd really hate to live or work in line of sight of that gun.
