Since so many of you were curious about the listening station, I thought I'd post a few pictures with a better overall view. Teufelsberg is located in what was formerly the American sector of Berlin. During the Cold War, devices that could intercept communications from the Russian sector of Berlin (East Berlin) were housed inside those bubbles, officially known as radomes.
The listening station has been abandoned for many years now. There was a proposal to destroy the old buildings and build a hotel on the site, but the plan was opposed by Berliners. Today the space is run by a group of street artists who give guided tours of the site. They hope to eventually raise enough money to turn the space into an artist's retreat and gallery of sorts. We'll see where the future takes us... You can read more about Teufelsberg and the listening stations by clicking on the links above.
A nice minaret looking structure. I hope they find a great purpose for the building soon.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting, I wish them well with their plans for it!
ReplyDeleteI think turning it into a artist's retreat is a fine idea! It would be a shame to tear it down.
ReplyDeletehow interesting!
ReplyDeleteOh, I do hope those artists are successful.
ReplyDeleteHow very interesting. Now I have to read some more to discover the purpose of the shape of the place.
ReplyDeletethat's cool that there's an effort to preserve them.
ReplyDeleteI wish them them all the best to keep it open as an artist`s t retreat - not much hope though. Money rules. Have you ever been to the " Tacheles" ?
ReplyDeleteThat would be a good new use of these structures.
ReplyDeleteI hope they can save it but it will be pricey!
ReplyDeleteIt's a real monument from the past. Yes let's hope it will stay there.
ReplyDeleteThere's a great piece of history! It's certainly seen better days but the structures themselves are interesting shapes.
ReplyDeleteI hope the street artists succeed! It sounds much better than destroying them and building a hotel.
ReplyDeleteYesterday's photos and todays... all about Big Brother to me. Who's listening?
ReplyDeleteSo interesting, Halcyon.
