Memorial park

Ernst Thälmann was a German communist party leader who was arrested by the Gestapo as a political dissident in 1933. He spent more than ten years imprisoned under the Nazis, where he was most likely tortured, before being assassinated at the Buchenwald concentration camp in 1944. Check back tomorrow to see the centerpiece of this park which bears his name. Until then, you'll see more signs at Signs, Signs.

PS: Don't forget to take a look at Halcyon Travels for more from my trip to Israel.

  2. He lived a long time in prison. And, no doubt, it was brutal.

  3. From a dark time in history he and many more suffered right up to their death.

  4. Extremists cannot tolerate the thinking of people who don't agree with them. Sadly, there always seems to be extremists somewhere in the world.

  7. Had not heard of this man but I can only imagine what horrors he experienced. Interesting that there is a park named after him. Is this park in the area that was East Berlin?

  8. Honor to him, but after the war his comrades had a lot more time to do about the same things to many other people.

  13. Buchenwald held many dark secrets. Strange to see a German man of standing included with the Jews imprisoned there.

    1. The prison camps that were in Germany were used in the beginning only for political prisoners. Communists were especially targeted.

  14. This looks like a walled park? Shame about the graffiti.
