July theme day: Celebrating summer

When the FIFA world cup took place in Germany in 2006, Berlin instated the Fan Meile so that Germans in the capitol who could not get tickets to the matches would have a place to gather and watch them together. The idea was so successful that they brought it back for the following World Cups.

These shots are from last week's match - USA vs. Germany. The weather conditions were decidedly un-summerlike, cold rain and hail. but people were celebrating nonetheless!

Tomorrow I'll show you another popular way Germans celebrate summer. Until then you can see more interpretations of this month's theme here.

PS: Happy Canada Day, eh!!!

  11. I cannot get anything done because I have been watching the World Cup! Congratulations on Germany's wins so far (they play France on July 4) but they haven't played the USA yet this year, but they will later on if the US beats Belgium today; your photo that identifies the game against the US is inaccurate---it has to be a different team. The US has played and defeated both Ghana and Portugal during this World Cup series.

    1. Germany played the US on June 26th. Final score Germany 1, US 0.
Germany and the US were in the same group for the first round matches. Each of the four teams in the group has to play each other. The two best from those four advance. Thus both Germany and the US advanced because they were the best from the group.

  17. This is fun! Good on the Germany beating USA but really happy that both teams got through to the next round. Germany had a nail-biting game last night but safely through. I have everything crossed that USA can pull off an upset and win tonight.
