This beautiful mosaic depicting the angels Raphael and Gabriel flanking Jesus dates back to 545. It's part of the large collection of Byzantine art at the Bode Museum. This particular piece comes from Ravenna, a city on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its many early Christian mosaic pieces (like this one).
Here's a better look at how the apse mosaic is presented in the room. I know this is not exactly a mural, but I think it's close enough. You'll find more of them at Monday Mural.
Works for me and a beautiful one at that. :-)
ReplyDeleteWow, that's really impressive and I like the second shot showing it in context....
ReplyDeleteIt's really lovely and I too like the second shot showing how it is displayed!

ReplyDeleteThis is a real beauty. It's hard to believe its age. Very nice, and I too like seeing it in its context.

ReplyDeleteA real sight to behold!
ReplyDeleteIndeed a beauty.
ReplyDeleteBreathtaking!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteAmazing details in the mosaic!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful indeed!
ReplyDeleteI love its bright colours!
ReplyDeleteI could spend hours looking at it!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that Byzantine mosaics traveled. Seems it would be an incredibly intricate process to move and ship a mosaic to another site. And an ancient one at that. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
ReplyDeleteBode was well-known for bringing "items" back from antiquity. We have practically a whole Greek temple reconstructed at the Pergamon museum. The idea back in those days was to bring the treasures back so that more people could see and enjoy them. Not so politically correct in this day and age.
