Although I suppose a coffin is a pretty dark symbol, I really like the way the light is coming into this room, making everything so bright. Information from the sign:
"Coffin: 2005, Tieli wood
Made of wood salvaged from dismantled temples of the Qing dynasty, Coffin resembles a set of furniture consisting of a table in the form of a bent casket, with two long benches on both sides. By designing furniture for the living in the form of funerary objects, Ai pokes fun at the meanings of life and death and our associations with daily rituals."
Love the wood and the color. I wonder what is intended by the bend in the casket and the benches? And I also wonder which "meanings of life and death," etc., he's referring to. So many questions. :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe he has a small dining room and a straight coffin wouldn't fit?
DeleteThat is a nice one!
ReplyDeleteI'd wondered about the bend in that casket. Lovely dark wood though.
ReplyDeleteI think the crockery may slide off the main piece though... ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt's not exactly a practical choice for dining furniture!
Deleteinteresting & strange.
ReplyDeleteI imagine the bend may be a symbol of shifts in life.
ReplyDeleteI like your take on it.
Deletewell that is different!
ReplyDeleteI like the picture, but I don't think I would like sitting on those benches!
ReplyDeleteHormis le fait que le bois est magnifique (et d'une provenance intéressante), me voilà larguée...
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the pieces you picked from the Ai Weiwei exhibition to show us Halcyon, this one here today made me smile a bit, couldn't help thing it could be a wee bit uncomfortable but then again if you were in it you wouldn't know that :) I like that the artist has a sense of humour also!
ReplyDeleteThe room is a pleasing looking room, but I am not quite sure if I think Al Weiwei is a fraud.
ReplyDeleteI am quite sure that this guy is a fraud...
