I visited the Gedenkstatt für die Opfer von Terror und Gewaltherrschaft (Memorial for victims of terror and oppression) awhile back. Something about seeing these names listed on a cold tablet made me really sad. If only memorials like this could really convey something of the people who died - their lives, their stories...
A task for future biographers, I should think.
ReplyDeleteForgive me for not understanding fully, but what event does this memorialize?
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't memorialize any particular "event", but victims of terror and oppression in general. Sorry, I should have included a translation.
Deletei think all memorials are very sobering.
ReplyDeleteSo sad...
ReplyDeleteAppropriate in black and white. I would assume this memorial, from what I've found, is a memorial for victims of the Nazi regime.
ReplyDeleteVery poignant.
ReplyDeleteVery sobering.
ReplyDeleteThe mere names are enough to make me shudder...
ReplyDeleteSo true!
ReplyDeleteKnowing the massive contributions that members of the Jewish community have made to the world, I always wonder what wonders would have derived from these victims if they had been able to live full lives.
ReplyDeleteThis memorial is really more for the non-Jewish victims. And it's not only for WWII... it also covers the East/West days.
DeleteSo very sad that so many people have had to face terror and oppression.
ReplyDeleteToo many such names in far too many places...
ReplyDeleteThe names alone are very effective in stimulating some reflection.
ReplyDeleteI guess their stories are known by the people that knew and loved them...
ReplyDeleteAnd it still goes on in so many different parts of the world....
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way about the Vietnam wall, but I guess the sheer and horriying number of names is meant to speak to us... And does, but I too want more!
