Almost everyone has heard of Claus von Stauffenberg thanks to Tom Cruise's famous movie The Valkyrie. But did you know there was a man who tried to assassinate Hitler in 1939, years before Stauffenberg's attempt? His name was Johann Georg Elser and this silhouette is a memorial to him. I think the simplicity of this piece makes it even more powerful (it also looks great in black and white!). If only he had succeeded in his attempt, things might have turned out very differently. I guess we'll never know, but his story is an interesting one - click on his name above to read more. You can find more signs at Signs, Signs.
I like this one a lot!
ReplyDeleteIt's something different, but it works. I do know there were several attempts on Hitler's life before the Stauffenberg operation, and I had heard of that particular one, but the name had escaped me.
ReplyDeleteI like this!
ReplyDeleteSome of them tried and they aren't always given the recognition they deserve. This is a striking one yet I wonder if it isn't too abstract.
ReplyDeleteAn interesting post. An most unusual sculpture. Like your photo if it.
ReplyDeleteThe silhouette is very effective, great angle to show it at its best.
ReplyDeleteA great homage for this brave man!
ReplyDeletewhat an interesting memorial and it is so powerful in profile...love it!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about Johann Georg Elser, who must have understood just how dangerous a man Hitler was way before the rest of the world did. If he had killed Hitler, we likely would never have known what Hitler was truly capable of. I very much like this silhouette and am glad Elser is being remembered.
ReplyDeletereminds me of some magic staff struck in the ground. The shape is quite dramatic.
ReplyDeleteThat is some story, if only he had succeeded. Nice to see he is remembered
ReplyDeleteBeautifully shown here Halcyon, perfect in B&W. yes.. if only!
ReplyDeleteImpressive memorial. I also like the perspective here.
