Something about this bust of Luther really appealed to me. His contemporaries say he was a harsh, but eloquent man. I guess you would have to be quite stubborn to effect such a tremendous change as the Protestant Reformation. Even if you are not religious, this reformation made a big impact on society that can still be felt today.
Protestant or otherwise, I still can't decide whether I like Luther better in color or black and white. What do you think?
i like the b&w this time. the color reminds me of soap - like those little handsoaps made into shapes. i'd hate to wash my hands with a part of history. :)
ReplyDeleteSomehow I find the idea of washing my hands with Luther's head funny!
DeleteI've got a statue of Luther given to me by a friend. It's probably got some value or I'd discard it. You can paint him anyway you wish for all I care! :))
ReplyDeleteIn colour, I think. I'm agnostic, but yes, his reformation had a positive effect on history, and a huge one.
ReplyDeleteI prefer the black and white here.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll go for B&W this time!
ReplyDeleteHe looks massive, stolid, and in need of fewer calories. No questioning your description of his accomplishments.
ReplyDeleteMy wife is from a German Lutheran family, but she belongs to the lefty version in the US. The right-wing Lutherans around here are as hard as this stone.
My husband is also a "confirmed" Lutheran. But he doesn't believe.
DeleteI definitely like the color image best.
ReplyDeleteLindy
I often wonder how true to life they are. I like the B&W best
ReplyDeleteI think I marginally prefer the b&w!
ReplyDeleteFor me the color. I must say that Luther looks a bit baroque here. Do you know when the statue was made.
ReplyDeleteSorry sc, I didn't take a picture of the sign, so no idea. :(
DeleteI prefer the B&W version.
ReplyDeleteI'd go for colour!
ReplyDeleteI'd vote for the b/w version.
ReplyDeleteOkay, this is one of those times when the black and white version is better. He doesn't look so stern in this statue.
ReplyDeleteThe B&W is quite strong.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to read earlier comments saying he looks stern. I'm with Sharon. If anything, he looks a bit fleshy and soft to me.
ReplyDeleteEven though I almost always prefer color images, the colors here are just different shades of beige-to-brown, so maybe the more straightforward black and white works as well or better.
He made a huge impact on people! One of my ancestors was a Swiss guard in Rome at the time Luther was around. Hearing Luther teaching he decided to convert....I find it fascinating.Luther must have been a very charismatic person.
